Supporting people's nutritional needs - getting started
Nutrition is essential for life. Getting the right food and fluids is just as important as getting the right drug treatment, or any other treatment. Without nutrition, we cannot survive. Ensuring the people in our care receive the right nutrition is key to any caring role. Healthcare assistants (HCAs) make a considerable contribution to this essential aspect of care. The role includes:
- Understanding nutrition (and nutritional needs)
- Nutritional screening (including identifying, observing and reporting malnutrition)
- Supporting and assisting people to eat and drink
